3D printer doubles as recycler in space

Printing and recycling in space is happening now: Wow. The Refabricator, a new machine at the ISS, is aptly named; it’s both a 3D printer and a recycle machine. This invention allows astronauts to make tools to exact specs so that they can make replacement parts in space, rather than wait months for what they need.

The machine also recycles items it’s already printed, enabling that material to be made into another part or tool. The Refabricator can also recycle shipping materials.

NASA awarded an SBIR contract to a small business in Seattle, Washington to build the recycling system. Now scientists in space can ‘go green’ and re-use waste, saving time and reducing costs not only for NASA but for commercial space travel. It’s the first such machine in orbit.
